Engineering Manager — Private Island Resort
KLK Consulting Ltd. is seeking an experienced Engineering Manager for a private island resort in the, Bahamas. This is a management-level opportunity for a technically strong, hands-on engineering leader with proven experience overseeing resort facilities, critical utility systems, and a multi-disciplinary maintenance team in a remote island environment.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the overall integrity, performance, and preventative maintenance of the resort's facilities, grounds, equipment, and essential operating systems — from power generation and water production to guest-facing villas and infrastructure. This role calls for someone proactive, organized, safety-conscious, and capable of leading a team through the unique demands of a luxury island property, where self-sufficiency and quick problem-solving matter as much as technical know-how.
Bahamas nationals with the right to work are preferred. Starting pay rate will be based on experience.
Key Responsibilities
The Engineering Manager will lead the resort's engineering and maintenance operations, directing a four-person team across property maintenance, repairs, groundskeeping, and facility upkeep, while owning preventative maintenance planning, work order completion, contractor supervision, inspections, equipment logs, and emergency response.
Lead and develop the maintenance team, overseeing repairs and upkeep of resort facilities, villas, grounds, and equipment.
Manage preventative maintenance programs for generators, reverse osmosis (RO) water systems, air-conditioning, refrigeration, kitchen equipment, and golf carts.
Supervise the boat maintenance team and assist with marine/dock equipment as required.
Ensure villas are inspected ahead of guest arrival and that maintenance issues are resolved promptly and discreetly.
Track and follow up on work orders to ensure timely, thorough completion.
Select and supervise on-site contractors for specialized or capital projects.
Maintain detailed vehicle, equipment, machinery, and maintenance logs.
Coordinate routine maintenance and respond to minor and emergency repairs.
Manage inventory of tools, equipment, and supplies — accounting for the lead times and logistics of remote-island procurement.
Enforce safety procedures and proper use of safety equipment across the team.
Meet daily with the Resort Manager to report on maintenance status, risks, and recommended solutions.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate brings strong technical engineering knowledge, proven leadership ability, and the composure to manage shifting priorities in a fast-paced, resource-limited resort environment.
Core requirements:
Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office, email, and internet use.
Demonstrated leadership ability — able to motivate, train, and supervise a team.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Strong multitasking, time-management, problem-solving, and prioritization skills.
Proficiency with hand tools and power equipment.
Working knowledge of plumbing, electrical, construction, pool systems, and grounds maintenance.
Ability to respond to resort needs outside of regular business hours.
At least one year of supervisory experience preferred.
At least three years of experience in general maintenance, repair work, and groundskeeping preferred.
Skills that set candidates apart at a property like Kamalame Cay (and other boutique out-island Bahamas resorts) — worth screening for or highlighting in the posting, even where not strictly required:
Hands-on experience with off-grid/remote-island power generation and load management, not just routine generator servicing.
Familiarity with reverse osmosis and desalination water systems specific to out-island Bahamas properties, where water security is a daily operational concern.
Hurricane and storm-resilience know-how — securing structures, storm-proofing utilities, and rapid post-storm assessment and repair.
Basic understanding of solar/renewable energy systems, as more Bahamas out-island properties are integrating them to reduce fuel dependency.
Marine and dock infrastructure maintenance, given the boat-dependent logistics of island resorts.
Capital planning and budgeting exposure — able to advise on FF&E/OS&E lifecycle and prioritize capex against a remote-property maintenance backlog.
Vendor and freight-logistics fluency — sourcing parts and coordinating contractor visits when everything arrives by boat or charter.
A calm, resourceful troubleshooting mindset — the ability to improvise a fix with what's on hand when the nearest hardware store is a boat ride away.
Physical Requirements
This position requires the ability to stand, sit, and walk for extended periods. The employee must be able to lift or move up to 10 pounds regularly and up to 75 pounds frequently.
